When a composer submits his work for various projects he is often asked to make music that sounds like another.  Today is not the day of innovation or cultivating your own sound.  To be successful, a composer/producer has to sound like whatever is currently on the radio and in film.  Is this really good for music today?  Have we ever thought that maybe as composers it is our destiny to give birth to sounds that have never been heard before.  If you only copy the musical arrangements of todays popular sound, you could be stifling your creativity.  Having true musical creative freedom will allow a composer to receive musical vibrations from within.  A real composer has his own sound.  They do not violate that “still small voice” by striving to only imitate completely the sound of another composer.  The greatest composers may take “bits and pieces” of musical ideas from others, but do not copy anyone’s sound wholesale.

A real composer has his own sound because his musical “inner voice” is leading him down the path of destiny.  To be relevant, a composer or producer will have todays sound built into the fabric of their orchestrations.  Their sound will be innovative in some way because every personality approaches sound differently.  The new innovative sound will come through a clear and open human channel.

There are composers that are literally born to bring forth musical harmonies, melodies that will inspire a generation of listeners to acheive.  Music has that kind of power.  Great music is the backdrop and soundtrack to the lives of many people.  It is hard to inspire when you are mentally scanning, copying and reproducing someone else’s sound.  Some composers/ artists are born to inspire the youth as they grow up, by giving them a musical and emotional anchor to hold on to.  Pure uncontrived music has the power to send an emotional thrill to the soul beyond the mind to release us from the daily pressures of life.  When music is created directly from the heart with love and passion it can change thoughts and inspire a human being to take a different path in life.  Music has had a transformative effect on my life.  Music has allowed me to lift my thinking beyond earthly concerns to envision new thought possibilities for myself.  Music can also be depressing, even great or at its best totally awe inspiring.  As a composer you are not looking to the left or right to emulate someone else’s sound, you want to look within.  That is where your musical and spiritual heart lives.  The real composer receives and gives birth to music from this secret place within.
