Steve Jobs 2

Combined with his flair for creating, Steve Jobs had the ability to use his intense charisma to push his employees to do and accomplish the impossible.  Here are some examples of the mentality, that helped him turn the dream of Apple into an ever expanding reality.  A software engineer from Apple spoke of Jobs ability to shape reality using the famous Reality Distortion Field:

“Tribble said the Jobs would not accept any contrary facts.  The best way to describe the situation is in a term from Star Trek, Steve has a Reality Distortion Field.  In his presence, reality is malleable.  He can convince anyone of practically anything.  It wears off when he’s not around.  It was dangerous to get caught in Steve’s distortion field, but it was what led him to actually be able to change reality.  The reality distortion field was a confounding melange of a charismatic rhetorical style, indomitable will and eagerness to bend any fact to fit the purpose at hand.”

Charisma is a gift, not a given.  Many people think that they can develop a Type A personality and become a leader.  When you are in the presence of someone who actually has charisma you are aware of an intangible, super magnetic, super persuasive force that reaches out and touches the people that are around them.  Charisma cannot be faked.  Most great leaders have charisma which they are born with.  This is one of the main tools they use to convince those around them to help them to execute their ideas.  Steve Jobs used his charisma to direct those who worked for him to create amazing Apple products.  After reading the book I realized he infused his personality and vision into his products.

Most people are aware of the technology inside Apple products but so few are aware of how every detail that went into the creation of the design was absolutely intentional and done with purpose.  These are the thoughts of an individual whose products work as efficient as they look.  There have been moments when the technological components within an Apple product have been rearranged to fit the aesthetic design.  Here is a quote from Andy Hertzfeld (A member of the original Mac team) on Steve Jobs the Artist:

“Jobs thought of himself as an artist, and he encouraged the design team to think of ourselves that way too, said Hertzfeld.  The goal was never to beat the competition or to make a lot of money.  It was to do the greatest thing possible, or even a little greater.  He once took the team to see an exhibit of Tiffany glass at the Metropolitan Museum in Manhattan, because he believed they could learn from Louis Tiffany’s example of creating art that could be mass produced.”

The reason why I am over emphasizing Steve Jobs deep interest in artistic design is because the shape, feeling and overall look of Apple products speaks of an attention to detail in these areas.  If Apple products did not have the design qualities they possessed, I believe that they would lose much of their magnetic quality and even sales.  There have been automobiles in which yearly sales have gone down (to a degree) due to the public’s distaste of the latest model design.  The quality and design of a product has the ability to touch the heart of the consumer in a deep way.  We can all tell when a product is quickly put together merely for mass production purposes.  After we purchase it we quickly grow tired of its plain, thoughtless design.  See below the final quote for this article in which Steve Jobs has Apple employees put the final touches on a Macintosh design prototype:

“When the design was finally locked in, Jobs called the Macintosh team together for a ceremony.”  “Real artists sign their work”, he said.  So he (Steve Jobs) got out a sheet of drafting paper and a Sharpie pen and had all of them sign their names.  The signatures were engraved inside each Macintosh.  No one would ever see them, but the members of the team knew their signatures were inside, just as they know that the circuit board was laid out as elegantly as possible.  Jobs called them each up by name, one at a time.  Jobs waited until last, after all 45 of the others.  He found a place right in the center of the sheet and signed his name in lowercase letters with a grand flair.  Then he toasted them with champagne.”

The quotes I have carefully taken from Steve Jobs biography show how the assumptions we have about products can be true.  Those individuals I have known in my life who have had the opportunity to use Apple computers for their creative endeavors have always been impressed with them.  There are many business people, graphic designers, musicians, audio engineers, architects, and others who depend on the ease of use, stylish design, and rock solid dependability of these computers.  I have used an Apple computer (with Protools) to engineer, sequence and produce music.  It is good to know that Steve Jobs as a visionary had the intent to create a quality products that have a completely unique artistic design.  I would hope that the biography “Steve Jobs” by Walter Isaacson be an inspiration for people who have the faith to realize their dreams that are constantly elbowing them from the center of their hearts.  There are many gems, jewels and keys to success contained within the pages of this book.  We may be inspired to turn some of our dreams into reality.  Read and enjoy.
