The Smartphone and Tablet Killed the DeskTop PC Part 1
The desktop has been the mainstay of consumer PC purchases since they became popular in the 80’s. From the early Apple computers, the Commodore 64 and many others the desktop was the popular computing tool for the home, office and school. There was no other option. We could not even conceive of a different technology to use because that was all that was marketed and promoted to the consumer at the time. The consumers needs in the past were much simpler than today: printing with dot matrix printers, spreadsheets, limited games, word processing, manipulating data with floppy drives, monochrome monitors (no color), programming (schools (BASIC) and very limited internet access. In the 80’s there could not have even been the slightest concept of the capabilities smartphones and tablets have today. Some current smart phone and tablet capabilities are: vastly improved screen resolution, vivid color, touchscreens, portable internet wi-fi access, music download capabilities, e-book download capabilities, file sharing, cloud technology, speech command execution, movie viewing, GPS, internet radio access, cameras, video, sending photos via social media, unlimited portability, smaller chips and killer APPS. I am just scratching the surface concerning the current power of smartphones and tablets. The Smartphone and Tablet Killed The Desktop PC.
The desktop is being killed and may be doomed for eventual extinction. If a consumer would be able to execute most of their tasks on the run and in daily life what would be the need for a bulky personal computer. the actual chips and inner hardware are getting smaller and more efficient. With all data to be eventually stored with Cloud Technology who would need a hard-drive. One important question to ask is if there will be any need for a desktop in the world of streamlined portable technology?
